How do I know what kind of Remote Control I need?
Often our customers are wanting to replace a non functioning
remote control or upgrade a remote to add features like
timers - thermostat - programming or are wanting an easier
to see and operate touch screen model.
Features may be self evident in the description of the
remote whereas identifying the type of control might be
more confusing.
Of course your preference for
features are important but you must select a control that is
compatible with your Gas Logs. We strongly suggest you
consult your instruction Manual for your gas logs or gas
fireplace. If you can not locate the information contact the
manufacturer of your gas logs with the complete model number
found on a tag or metal plate attached to your fireplace
with a metal chain or cable.
You may be able to view a few
examples that we have provided below to identify your
Control Valve Type.
Millivolt Gas Control Valves

The most common control valve used on both ventless and
vented gas log models is the millivolt valve. This valve can
be operated by a wall switch or a toggle switch located on
the logs. Below are some examples of Millivolt Valves which
require millivolt remote controls.

By far the best way to identify a millivolt gas valve is by
its three electrical terminals located on the side of the
valve and labeled TPTH - TP - TH

These terminals
have equal size 1/4 " male spade connectors. Your Millivolt
remote control receiver has two wires equipped with matching
female spade connectors that simply plug on to the two
outside terminals. (TPTH and TH)
Modulating Gas Control Valves

There are many modulating
gas control valves in use today. The operation of this valve
allows the flame height to be variably controlled from the
remote control. A small battery operated motor opens and
closes a rotary valve within the Gas Control Valve. A
significant distinction of the modulating valve is that it
has only 2 different size wire terminals or wires. See
Pictures. Another distinction of the variable valve is the
sound of the motor running as it adjusts the valve open or
close.

Latching Solenoid Gas Control Valves

A third type of gas control valve is operated
by a solenoid. This valve may look similar to the Variable
Flame gas valve but it only starts and stops the flame by
remote control. I does not vary the intensity of the flame
from the remote. When operating this valve from the remote a
distinctive CLICK is heard.

Manual Gas Control Valves
Manual Control Valves
cannot be operated by a remote Control. Manufacturers of Ventless gas
logs do not recommend field conversion of their logs to
change the gas control valve.
Skyteck manufactures
remote control valve kits that can convert Vented gas
logs. Look for the kit with the control functions you would
like to have.
Here is what you might
see when looking at a manual control valve. You will only
have one knob - no switches - no wiring terminals.
